~ Loch Maree, Badachro, Loch Gairloch ~
~ Loch Maree & Slioch ~ Loch Maree is one of the finest of Scotland's fresh water lochs. In 1877, Queen Victoria stayed at the Loch Maree Hotel, finding the area to be a wild uncivilised spot, like the end of the world. She noted in her diary that "hardly anyone ever comes here". She allowed a nearby waterfall to be named Victoria Falls. Loch Maree lies under the great hills which are always blended of the softest of colours. The great white-capped mound of Slioch (3217 feet) dominates the eastern end of the loch. There are also the pink sandstone slopes of of Meall a' Ghuibhais leading up to the corries of Beinn Eigh.
~ Loch Maree from Poolewe ~ Many small islands stud Loch Maree. For anyone interested in Scotland's wealth of flora and fauna, a visit to the Loch Maree area is essential. There is no road along the north-east shore of the loch, but a track, for walkers only, does run along most of its length.
~ Gairloch ~ The road on the west side of Loch Maree leaves the loch side about half way along its length, and heads off due west for Gairloch. Gairloch village, at the head of Gair Loch, has a fine open situation with excellent sandy beaches. It is still a fishing port. The views from Gairloch, and around the village are breathtaking, taking in the Torridon mountains, Skye and even the Outer Hebrides. Gairloch has a golf course, and houses the local Heritage Museum.
