From Fort Augustus to Ullapool (or Durness) through the Western Highlands of Scotland

~ If you like driving, and you like great scenery, this is as good as it gets in the U.K. ~

Travelling north to get here, I suggest Glasgow, Crianlarich, Fort William, Fort Augustus (where I start my map)The trip then takes you past:

Loch Ness, Loch Cluanie, Loch Duich, Loch Alsh, Loch Carron, Loch Kishorn, the Applecross Peninsula, Loch Shieldaig, Loch Torridon, Loch Clair, Kinlochewe, Loch Maree, Loch Gairloch, Loch Ewe, Gruinard Bay, Loch Broom, Loch Glascarnoch, Loch Luichart, Loch Gowan, Loch Dughaill & Ullapool. You can then continue up the coast to Durness to exend the journey (well worth it if you have the time).

The total Distance from Frot Augustus to Ullapool and back is 300 miles.

If you just do the 'loop' it's about 180 miles

The total Distance from Frot Augustus to Durness and back is 430 miles

............................................. .....................it's here>>....

The roads on this route are often very fast with good surfaces, except on the west coast where they become single track - but generally provide the best views. Fort Augustus and Ullapool have good places to stay, or if you are doing the shorter 'loop' then Shieldaig, Torridon or Applecross would be good places to start/finish.

Some views from the trip.. all taken from the road

This journey is ruined if the weather is very bad, you won't see anything

However, If it's sunshine and showers, sometimes you get the best views

the roads in the Highlands vary, but when they are good...

...they're empty
